Program Overview

The Medical Assistant is a 9-month medical assistant program designed to train students in basic medical assisting skills. A medical assistant is a multi-skilled professional of the healthcare team committed to assisting physicians and nurses in bringing patient care to an optimal level. They perform duties ranging from scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding to taking vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and drawing blood.

Program Objective and Goals

The Medical Assistant program is designed to prepare students to become skilled office subordinates who work closely with doctors, registered nurses and other office personnel delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during and after hospital stays, surgical procedures and doctor’s care.

Clinical Externship

At the end of the program, the student will be scheduled for a clinical externship where he/she can gain hands-on experience in a physician’s office and hospital under the supervision and control of the AIHT, overseen by a designated site supervisor. Externships allow students to develop skills and make connections with working professionals.

AIHT has clinical affiliations with numerous healthcare facilities where students will be placed at one or more of these affiliated sites and must complete their clinical hours based on the schedule provided by the school. Students cannot begin the externship until all required classroom and lab hours are completed.

Certification Exam Eligibility

Medical assistant graduates will be eligible to take the medical assistant certification exams offered by American Medical Technologists (AMT). Graduates who pass the certification exams can earn the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential from AMT, or the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential from NHA.

The daily duties of a medical assistant vary from office to office, but some of the most common daily tasks include:

  • Back up the front desk: One general area of work a medical assistant may need to help with is supporting the front desk. While the specific tasks may differ each day, this commonly involves patient chart management, scheduling appointments, organizing bill documentation, managing incoming calls and assisting with patient referrals.
  • Prescription education: A medical assistant may also provide prescription education, certification and preparation, which is often performed before the patient leaves for the pharmacy. A medical assistant must have adequate knowledge of medication, dosage and other details, including charting this information in the electronic medical record.
  • Lab and tests: Medical assistant may draw blood, perform EKGs, collect swabs or prepare slides for the lab.
  • Rooming the patient: Rooming the patient involves a medical assistant taking the patient’s vital signs, escorting them to the examination room and documenting any questions, concerns or complaints they have on their record before the physician arrives.

Skills and Education

A medical assistant should have a strong knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology and basic medical procedures, including dressing a wound, drawing blood and more. Medical assistants must also know how to perform basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A medical assistant program will cover various skills, including:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Phlebotomy
  • Electrocardiography (EKG)
  • Wound care, Ob-Gyn, Pediatrict Practice etc
  • Vitals
  • Introduction to Medical billing

Medical Assistant Program Length

AIHT’s medical assistant program is 36 weeks (9 months) long for day classes and 46 weeks long for evening classes. The coursework also includes 225 hours of an externship, allowing students to apply their skills in a hands-on environment.

Medical Assistant Program Requirements

Fortunately, only a few requirements are necessary to apply for a medical assistant program, including a high school diploma or GED.


A few pre-requisites are necessary for entering an accredited medical assistant training program. Potential candidates must have a passing score of 14 on the Wonderlic Exam and a minimum technical and health standards requirement.
